Brougham Castle (English Heritage)

This Medieval castle was both a barrier against Scots invaders and a prestigious residence, where Edward I was welcomed as a guest. It fell into decay as the years passed but was restored in 1649 by the formidable Lady Anne Clifford (famed for challenging inheritance law). There is still much for groups to explore, including an unusual double gatehouse.
